Why is compromise considered to be a virtue in itself? The left is always shrieking one way or another about how republicans refuse to compromise, how they won’t work with the insane budget dealings and spending plans created by them and all the while, the beloved media touts republicans as extremists for refusing to compromise.
The one question no one asks, is why comprise is a virtue in itself? Think about it, there are things that everyone should hold in their life that cannot be compromised, from religious views to political beliefs, everybody has something that is non negotiable. And these terms are so integral to our core, we are literally defined by them.
But why exactly, does the left and the media demand that the republicans compromise on what is their core value? Not because they respect their opponents morals and beliefs, but rather because they demand that their opponents sacrifice their own values in order to further democrat values. And when this doesn’t happen, when that strange fluke of restraint occurs, the media has a field day with it.
Why won’t they compromise? They claim angrily, as if the word itself were a virtue. They shout and whine incessantly as if the right had no right to maintain it’s own values. God forbid the left ever compromise on anything. Dissent is patriotic until Bush left office, then all of a sudden compromise became the golden rule in politics.
Compromise cannot be a virtue in itself. It cannot hold anything more than the concept of reaching a settlement of mutual concessions. When we seek compromise we must look at the merits of the discussion, not the fact that it is compromise. We must seek to understand why our opponents will not compromise and not merely say “They won’t compromise, they are unreasonable, they are holding America hostage.”
The real issue, is that the left is, oftentimes, fickle in their own values. Sure they hold certain things in high esteem, abortion, race, etc. But when it comes down to brass tacks, they hold one things above all and that is moral relativism. And nothing is more dangerous to the concept of there being no right and wrong than having a firm value structure. They clamor for republicans to abandon their principles only for one purpose and that purpose is to serve their own interests. This is not compromise. It is merely demanding that one’s opponent goes along with whatever the other has to say. When that opponent refuses, they shriek the golden phrase “obstructionist!” as if refusing to bend on one’s belief structure is a vice in itself.
Don’t believe the hype. Compromise is nothing more than a tool. It cannot be a virtue and should not be demanded or praised as one.
